To be completely honest,
this blog isn't going in the direction I want it to go in.
I feel a lot of pressure. And you know what? At the risk of "losing" followers, I'm gonna just put it out there: I want to give you original content. I don't want to reblog DIYs off of Pinterest, and repost pictures everyone's seen. Seriously. I feel a lot of pressure to do this, because frankly, everyone's doing it. And it's "the way to get followers". But seriously? I don't care about how many followers I have (GASP!).
Step 1: Post lots of pictures from Pinterest. Because Pinterest is like crack to blog followers.
Step 2: Reblog DIYs someone else did that you have no intention of doing, they just look pretty.
Step 3: Host a ton of giveaways solely because giveaways = followers.
Am I right?
I mean, that stuff is totally fine. I'll admit my healthy (or not) addiction to Pinterest and that there's a ton of inspiring stuff on there. But it gets tedious when I see the same stuff reblogged 4 different times on different sources. I want to give you original content. I want to show you stuff I did/made/wore/created. I want to support my friends who are incredible artists.
I want to be frank and weird. I'm a bit of a sassy person. I want this to be okay on my blog; but I feel a lot of pressure to blog about how I wake up at 7am everyday (I don't), make the perfect cup of coffee (I do), walk my dog (that's later), and have a sugar-coated, super-amazing day filled with rainbows. That shit simply doesn't happen to me. My day usually consists of tripping over things and way too much coffee.
I want to take this blog in a different direction.
I want to talk about how I'm super white but secretly love really ghetto dance music. And how much road rage I get as a result of living in Los Angeles. And how I love edgy fashion. And all the hilariously awkward things I do at bars. And how I fail at relationships. And my adventures from my upcoming move to Atlanta (3 weeks! Holy cow) And I'm gonna start making videos again. And showing you my "weird" art that usually stays hidden in my sketchbook. Like this (self portrait):
Thank you for reading. And if you still intend to read on, thank you.
Do your thing! I think people really appreciate honesty and genuine writing, and they can tell when its forced. That, more than anything, is what makes me not read a blog. I think you're going to be just fine. And plus, I like reading about my fellow weirdos.
ReplyDeleteI want to read about you and your work, so this is just fine by me. :)
ReplyDeleteGood for you!
ReplyDeleteI became overwhelm to do everything suggested
then I read a very successful blogger's list of her own rules and I follow quite a few:
"Be true to yourself, blog with integrity, treat your blog like you are talking to a BF or your sister." Now, I enjoy my blog.
You are on the right blogging track!
Oh- and I too am hooked on Pinterest, but I pin what I like now - not what people want me to pin.
 i am just happy reading your posts and seeing your art :) no need for re-bloggin.
ReplyDeletei really like this 'weird' sketch, can u post more, pleeaaase!
and oh, about followers - i have only 9 and post only art.
Yay for you! I absolutely agree! I don't like to read blogs that are simply reposts from Etsy or Pinterest. I like to see what the blogger is doing and/or thinking.
ReplyDeleteWhoo hoo! Go girl!
Blogging Buddies
When I started blogging earlier this year, I read that one just posted about what one wanted to - not try to pretend to be something one isn't. I love making toys, most toys have a story and that's what I try to do when posting at www.ColdhamCuddliescalling.blogspot.com. Am going to expand it in 2012 - and thinking of asking guest bloggers to tell the stories about their favourite toys for a start and then talk about their shops. What think you all?
ReplyDeleteIn the interim: have a great Christmas, everyone!
Your blog is your art! It should represent you and your personality. There are so many people out there ready to tell you what/how you should be doing, but at the end of the day, this needs to be something you're proud of and look forward to doing. I would ten times rather read about your original content than a bunch of re-posts. I think you're totally on the right track, and I'm excited to see what new and amazing stuff you will come up with! :) Best of luck.
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm visiting you for the first time but I'm already loving what you said. I love original content. I think the best way to go about blogging is just to blog from your heart. I'll definitely be back to read more!!
ReplyDeleteFrom your Blogging Buddies Friend,
Pei Li
I love reading about your work and life! I have a bunch of blogs I check constantly, and this one has to be my favorite. Your art, sense of humor, daily adventures, and craft are inspiring! Besides, reblogged DIYs get old fast.
ReplyDeleteGo in whatever direction you want. I can guarantee I (and the other commenters) will follow!
I actually enjoyed this post! I personally enjoy blogs where people blog from their heart. I think it's far more intersting that doing what everyone else is doing. So do what you think you should and I'll continue to visit you. You are doing a great job!
ReplyDeleteI'm all for posting original content. Great to hear it, I always enjoy your personal posts.
ReplyDeleteThanks for asking about the Craft Show, it went really well. :)
Paige - me too! Sometimes the people with the weirdest, most honest blogs are my favourite :) Thank you for reading xoxo
ReplyDeleteJJacks - Thanks! That's really the direction I want to pursue. I want a more art-focused blog, something that keeps me accountable for continued work. And I really want to share my school stuff from SCAD.
Sandy - Great words of wisdom :) I'm super-addicted to Pinterest, but I dislike seeing pins there and on blogs over and over again. I like to pin from the source, not repin ;)
Betty - thanks so much! I'll definitely post up some more weird art lol. I've got a pretty cool art post I'm thinkin up :)
Sweet Posy Dreams - Thanks girl! I really appreciate that! And yea, I like to get to know the blogger as well :) Makes for a more engaging read.
Isobel - Thanks :) I'm also thinking about doing guest-blogging for other blogs, I think it'd be fun!
Ali - thanks so much for the encouragement! I definitely don't want to be a blog that just finds stuff on Pinterest and reblogs it to get followers - ick. Thanks for the kind words!
Pei Li - Hey girl! Thanks for stopping by! I loved your blog :) Thanks so much for the support, I'm glad what I wrote resonated with everyone!
Rin - Wow. Thank you so much! I am honoured to be a favourite read of yours! :) :) You just made me feel so warm and fuzzy :) Thanks so much for the support!
Sher - Thank you so much! There's definitely pressure to reblog "popular" things, but I really, really want this just to be a very honest, thoughtful account of some of my thoughts and work :) Thanks so much for reading and for your support!
Sabrina - Hey girl! :) Thanks so much! And of course, I'm glad it went well. Your blog is one of my favourites!
