illustration work for Jo Malone London Fragrances at a very special
Neiman Marcus event debuting the launch of their new line of London Rain fragrances! I had an amazing time creating 4 original watercolour
illustrations inspired by each new scent: Rain and Angelica, Wisteria and Violet, White Jasmine and Mint (my personal favourite), and Black Cedarwood and Juniper.
On Friday, I arrived at Neiman Marcus with my illustrations and supplies for the live painting event. It was a wonderful experience! Everyone on the team from Neiman Marcus and the lovely English gentlemen from Jo Malone London were absolutely kind and generous to me. The tables at the event were set with cakestands full of tea sandwiches and little pastries, and the space was scented with rain and florals. The clientele were treated to coffee and champagne as we all sampled classic scents and new scents from the Jo Malone Collection.
My works were set up at the front, and I explained my inspiration behind each painting; and began painting the inspiration of the fourth scent as the clientele sampled it.
The fourth scent, Black Cedarwood and Juniper, is a nighttime scent with notes of chili and cumin, with a mysterious, alluring base of cedarwood and juniper. I'll spare you the details about reasons why I dropped off the face of the blogging planet since October, let's just call it "grad school", capiche?

The truth is, my job has inspired me to start blogging again. My boss is an extremely gifted and smart marketer and entrepreneur, and as I have taken on a creative role in her business, I have begun to think a lot about my own restless blog. The truth is, I miss blogging. I like sharing my process, and with the advent of my passionate love affair with Instagram, I sort of replaced one with the other. I want to make a concerted effort to update here though, and share a little bit more insight than what one picture and a bunch of hashtags can do.

So without further ado,

And let's get back on the bus.

If I haven't posted in a week or so, you all have permission to call me names.

It's early February in Atlanta, and I survived the 2 inches of Snowpocalypse that turned the city into The Walking Dead. This native Northerner laughed over the dusting of snow (... until her car died in the middle of rush hour traffic and whipping snowflakes and angry people. All ended well though.)

I am working on my thesis and am about to graduate with my MFA, and it's a strange feeling. I am very happy at my job, and have taken on several freelance assignments, and will be exhibiting my work in a number of places this Spring. I'm curious where 2014 will take me, but I have a good feeling about it.

And I gave this sleepy blog a fresh face lift. Nice, eh?
So I chose a memory I have of a particularly blustery fall day when I was walking back from class in undergrad, and I found an injured bird. Enjoy!
Coming from a theatre major background (and having been in the show twice) this story (and the incredible score) is near and dear to my heart.

In particular, I wanted to share some process shots of the cover, which ended up being my favourite piece in the series. I truly enjoyed working in the format of a dust jacket - the unfolded, unwrapped piece gives a very wide composition, which is a fun challenge to design! I wanted something that would be cohesive when spread out as a whole image, but something that also worked as a powerful standalone image for the cover itself, if you were to see it sitting on a bookshelf.

In this piece, Jean Valjean is symbolically being lifted up from a position of slavery and servitude, to his high-status role of "Monsieur Mayor". Moreover, he undergoes a transformation of being a low-life to being an incredibly moral, grateful and kind man, which is really what the center of the story of Les Miserables is about.

1. Final sketch - the birds, rats and silhouettes of the figures were drawn separately and pieces together over the main sketch in Photoshop.

2. Background colour (usually involving comps and colour tests), and the main colour test for the Arc de Triomphe.

3. Laying in soft gradients and layers of clouds. I knew I wanted a feeling of airy translucency, so I created each cloud on a separate layer and played with the lightness of the colour and opacity.

4. Darkened the Arc for impact, filled the houses with flat colour, and added the ground texture (a stock photo).

5. Using more subtle gradients to create lighting and volume, as well as blocking in characters with flat colour.

6. Colourizing all lines, giving added interest and translucency in some areas.

7. Added in watercolour textures I had created and scanned into the clouds, also some ink textures into the houses, and flat darker details on the houses. I hand-drew the sculptures on the face of the Arc de Triomphe, scanned them in separately, and laid them in.

8. Finally, type is added, publisher's mark, spine, synopsis, and an ISBN barcode.

While most of my "ecstatic mind-journeying" is actually comprised of me staring blearily at my monitor, clutching my mug for dear life, I confess that my addiction to the coffee bean combined with my intensifying desire to travel has led me towards the creation of a new illustration.

A lot of coffee drinkers will say that, as time goes on, coffee drinking really becomes more of a ritual, more of moment for oneself than just an impersonal cup of caffeine. I must agree. It symbolizes a slowness of the moment in a day that - for the life of a freelancer or entrepreneur - is typically filled with chaos and flying-by-the-seat-of-your-pants.

Because this illustration is near and dear to my heart, I wanted to share some of my process work with you. These past few months, my work style has been evolving, and taking on new methods.

First I begin with a traditional pencil sketch. I look at several references, and keep my lines as clean as possible (and, of course, drink coffee while I work).

I have also been working on developing my skills in hand-drawn type. I have done a bunch of samples for a Style Guide I illustrated (forthcoming this Thanksgiving), and have since fallen in love. I will use my ruler to make sure I have even, straight lines, and then I will sketch out my type in pencil.

After I am satisfied with my pencil lines, I will tape a piece of tracing paper over my sketch and VERY carefully start tracing the letterforms in pen. I typically use Staedtler Pigment Liners in "FineLiner". These pens are acid-free and archival and give a good, black mark.

From there I will scan in the inked type, adjust the levels and colourize the lines. This print was instantly a hit at one of the boutiques my work is in here in Atlanta!

Recently I have been taking more and more opportunities to grow my illustration business, and in time for the holidays will be offering a new line of greeting cards! These have been an idea in my head for quite some time. Using my illustrations and giving them some fresh new colours and type, I transformed them into new Thank You Cards.

The type has all been hand-drawn and colourized in Photoshop, and the cards are printed on my Epson R1800 on 60lb creamy, gorgeous photo supreme matte paper. I have cut and folded them by hand. More seasonal cards will be coming :)

[ Check my Etsy Shop for the Cards! ]

I am so happy to admit that this summer I have felt my business getting the excited rumblings of an expected jump to the next level, and now we are climbing upward for sure :)

Good things are happening!
It's been awhile since I've been able to devote time to my sweet blog, but I am hoping to change that and get back in a blogging routine. The weeks have been full: full of art, full of time spent with my love, and full of business. Lots of business. Busy is good. Amen? Amen.

This summer has certainly been a time of change for me. I moved into a
new apartment (which is painted in various shades of mint and sea green
all over), started planning my thesis for my Master's Degree, and
starting working for a wonderful photography company doing
post-production work. And freelance has kept me busier than ever, and kept me learning more than ever.
I have also been putting up new work! Check out the new pieces :)
I am hoping to start blogging again at least once a week :) And as this blog layout feels a little too wintery - look out for a new blog design!

For now, this week is a busy one, working on finishing up a fashion illustration style guide project, continuing on some interior book illustrations, and finalizing some pieces for an upcoming gallery show.

Yep, busy is good.
Hoping all is well for you out in the blogging world!
The blog is blue! What the-- !")

Yep. The blog is blue! Like my mom plopping a bowl on my head when I was 7 and taking the scissors to my locks, my sweet little blog was in desperate need of a new style (though hopefully more appealing than my childhood bowl-cut: true story! My sister and I refer to this period as the "Dutch-Boy Haircut Phase" and shudder.)

I hope you like the new look! My new header is one of my most recent and well-received illustrations, and the buttons and sidebar have followed suit in a cool, gauzy palette. And I've even added in an Instagram button! Are you as addicted as me?

And in honour of the new look,
we're sporting a special process post!
Recently, I've moved more away from concept art, and into the realm of fashion illustration. It's already familiar territory, but now I am focusing my efforts on a very feminine, delicate style, with washes of watercolour and ink, and thought-provoking imagery. And of course pretty clothes.

In this process post, I will share shots of my work in progress of another of my most recent illustrations, "The Birds". This piece was created on 22x30" Arches 300lb Hotpress Watercolour paper, using graphite, watercolour, and india ink. And would you like to see it in full colour? Scroll on!
Finished!

This was truly a labor of love for me. I love the images that grow on you and excite you as you're working on them. Even if you're bone-tired, you're still ready to put the hours in to see it develop. (And birds are sweet things to draw.)

And if you'd like to see the digitally-coloured version,

I hope you liked seeing some of my process, and I am planning to update the blog much more now!

Thank you so much for reading, and Happy Spring!

Today my boyfriend and and I finally got to relax, go to an amazing bakery for lunch, and then take a long, leisurely walk through some really adorable parts of Atlanta. And my sweet Southern Gentleman held my hand the whole way :) We saw giant koi fish, pond turtles, and lots of furry buddies. Who needs a zoo?!

Did you do anything fun this weekend? Any Spring plans?

Happy Wednesday! While I'm continuing my full-conversion over into a Southern Belle, some of you may know that my roots are more Northern. A diehard Ravens fan, lover of seafood and Old Bay, and not-so-professional apprentice crabber (to my dad) right off of the Chesapeake Bay -- yep, you guessed it, I'm from Maryland.

Recently I was honoured with the opportunity to partner with the Baltimore Love Project as a finalist to design the newest t-shirt for my hometown. Their Lead Artist, Michael Owen, has set out on the path to bring more love into our city by giving its walls awesome graphic murals, and I get to join in on the fun!

Here's where you come in, and I need your help :)
Currently, Baltimore Love Project is running a contest for the newest t-shirt in town, and we are only 10 votes away from first place! I would be so honoured if you would take a moment to vote for my design.

Awesome. So how do I vote? (So glad you asked!)

Please follow THIS LINK to vote. I would be honoured if you'd select #2, my design, featured here in this post. All of the designs can be seen here, but please cast your vote in the poll.

What will winning mean for me?
Especially after winning the Superbowl and feeling connected as a town, winning the competition will give me the incredible opportunity to share my work with a lot of wacky, fun-loving, awesome Baltimoreans and people from everywhere. Not to mention it's a paying gig ;) This is also an initiative that is extremely close to my heart, as I search for ways to utilize my art skills and work to affect positive change in the world.

D'awww. Let's all hug. And vote! ;) Spread the love.
Voting will continue until approximately 11:59pm EST on Sunday, Feb. 24th. Hey ya'll! It's been about a month since my last update - my apologies! Life has certainly picked up for me. My freelance projects are taking off, and I've been working really hard on my projects for school. My inner Hermione Granger is having a jam session ;)

Since I'm sure you'd rather look at pretty pictures than read my ramble, here is a selection of some of my daily art posts from my Instagram (Mirilittlebird). Once I am able to speak about my freelance projects, I'll be sure to post them up!

Hi dear friends, Happy 2013 :) I hope it has already been a magnificent year for each and every one of you. As for me, it has been truly wonderful. It's been awhile since I have been able to update my blog between working at the ad agency, traveling home for the holidays, and spending quality time with my loved ones. Over the break, I think I only opened my computer a handful of times - how refreshing!

Tomorrow is back to the grind - time for work and to go back into grad school. And how lovely! My little body decided to fall ill the weekend right before. Blergh. Here's to going in to work at 9am with a head full of yuck and a zombie brain. But! The show must go on, eh? So it shall.

Here are a few fun posts to show some of the highlights

of this past month :)

If you are so inclined, please do follow me on Instagram at Mirilittlebird for daily art posts.

1. I have been creating postcard (4x6") sized original illustrations just for fun, after great success with a few over at Mint Gallery in Atlanta for their postcard pin-up show. These will be up in my Etsy Shop, MiribirdIllustrates, this week!

2. Here I am at Emily Amy Gallery, at which I had the pleasure of showing two of my Artist Books in late November (books pictured above). So many people came to support me, and I was truly touched. And someone special showed up ;)

3. Another postcard illustration that is already up and looking for a new home in my shop!

4. Some fun with watercolours, a sample illustration for a potential project - shh!

5. Little monogram frames I've been working on intermittently with watercolour and acrylic - also will be up in the shop this week!

6. Sketchbook airplane time from one of my many holiday trips.

Lastly,
I just wanted to say something small about my personal life. I have met someone truly wonderful, the special someone I mentioned above, quite a charming bloke, a man who lights me up. 2013 is off to the best start I think I've ever had, and I am incredibly happy in all facets of my life. I am truly blessed, and I just had to share. Love you all ~Erinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02500565479704820170noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7625177563968812012.post-49589402242222458842012-12-11T07:19:00.000-08:002012-12-11T07:19:55.433-08:00Major Changes After many months of deliberation and many hours of thought on the treadmill, I have decided to shift my focus almost exclusively to my illustration.

(The weird thing is when you have two things you love very much - it doesn't make sense that one should take from the other, but it does.)

So without further ado, I introduce to you my new shop, exclusively for illustration and prints (and hopefully other fun things down the road).
I apologize for my absence here -- life has taken off and been insanely busy for me (which is super awesome) I'm currently in the thick of finals week, and have started watching The Walking Dead (filmed in my city of Atlanta), and am feeling quite like a zombie myself.

Over the past few weeks, I have:

1. Cut off a part of my thumb that will never grow back (more amusing than gorey, don't worry).
2. Met real life zombies.
3. Found a secret bar from the 1920's with my girlfriends.
4. Became a Georgia voter for the first time, and spent election night with good friends.
5. Carved a pumpkin with a giant mustache.
6. Can now finally show a glimpse at my illustration full spread in Oblique Magazine!
7. Had two of my Artist Books in Atlanta's Open Studio Night.
8. Found out one of my Artist Books is on a promotional postcard for SCAD.
9. Made Pumpkin Cream Cheese Cake 3 times for various events and parties (perfected the recipe).
10. Started sculpting new holiday items for my Etsy Shop.

Story goes that these Princesses (who, in my adult years I recognize to be not as nice as I once thought) dance all night until they wear holes in their shoes, and no one can figure out where they go. So their father, the King, decides that if any man can figure out the mystery, he can marry one of his daughters. But if he should fail, the King would behead him (makes total sense). A bunch of dudes get their heads chopped off, because the Princesses drug the poor saps while they escape through their secret trapdoor. Meanwhile, an old humble soldier comes through the forest around the castle and meets an old hag who tells him not to drink the wine that the Princesses have poisoned, and pulls out an invisibility cloak that she just happens to have, you know, just in case. The soldier accepts, goes to the castle, dumps out the wine, pretends to snore, and then follows the Princesses through their trapdoor. He creeps after them as they pass through 3 groves of trees with silver, gold, and diamond-encrusted leaves, and then finally gets into a boat that sails them across a sea to a castle, where the Princesses dance with 12 Brad-Pitt-like Princes until dawn. When he returns, he brings a goblet from the castle and a branch from each of the trees as evidence and presents them to the King. And wham bam, he marries the oldest daughter.

If you'd like the more poetic version, I'd suggest reading the original story.

Here's some of my process:

For those who don't know, this method uses white claybord covered with india ink, and then utilizes scratching into the surface and adding marks with ink.

1. I worked on some comps in graphite, blocking out my main blacks, whites, and values.
2. From there I transferred my comp to the claybord and worked with the final sketch to finesse some of the marks and details.
3. Blacked in the blacks with india ink!
4. A shot of my humble little studio set up, and some mini claybords I was practicing mark making on (since I've never really used scratchboard before).
5. A close-up of some of the marks I had laid in, using a G-nib pen and ink, and then scratched away carefully to created the value.
6. Working in the final details! The black instrument is the G-nib pen, and the red instrument is the scratching tool ;)

The Final Work,

with hand-drawn type/title, and text added using Photoshop.

"Then down they all went, and at the bottom they found themselves in a most delightful grove of trees; and the leaves were all of silver, and glittered and sparkled beautifully. The soldier wished to take away some token of the place, so he broke off a little branch.

Then they came to another grove of trees, where all the leaves were of gold; and afterwards to a third, where the leaves were all glittering diamonds. And the soldier broke a branch from each."

And yes, those are severed heads hiding in the folds of her skirt ;)

Thanks for reading!

I spend a lot of time thinking about our shared emotions and experiences as people, because often it is what I want to address and explore in my work. Our pain, our feelings of rejection or acceptance, of inspiration or depression, are all things we have all encountered at one point in time. Sometimes our unacknowledged "togetherness" shocks me; that no matter who we are or our situation, we all feel the same drives, desires, anguish, happiness, longing. It is a comforting and strange thought, and one that I want to explore more in my work.

Today I attended a lecture and demo with the incredible James Gurney,

whose blog I have followed for years now. It was stunning to see his process in-depth, all the research he does, models he creates... and his devotion to his sketchbook was so inspiring. In the moments after his demo when he was just talking to a few of us, we got onto a discussion of learning how to draw well, and developing effective communication of our artistic expression. It's not solely about just expressing something; it's about renewing day in and day out a desire to build on yourself and your skills. This is why I love what I do: there is always more to learn, more beautiful, meaningful things to create. I want my work to affect people. I want people to feel something when they look at my work and to identify with me; I want to inspire as I have been constantly inspired.

I also just discovered this awesome song,

which is a perfect end to the day.

I knew I wanted to create a process post on my blog, so I made sure I remembered to stop and take pictures in the midst of my scribbling and frantic watercolouring.

This was a very personal work for me. When I'm allowed to have creative freedom, I almost always reach for darker imagery... it just feels natural for me. I still have a lot of unfilled goals in my personal life.

This work is created based on two quotes:

"Hell is empty and all the devils are here."

-- William Shakespeare

&

"I've learned love is like a brick, you can build a house or sink a dead body."

-- Lady Gaga

I started with a sketch, using a variety of references for myself and the birds. Before I laid down any watercolours (aka "the scary part"), I did a few digital colour tests to figure out what direction and palette I wanted to work in.

I had settled on the fourth colour test, and broke out the watercolours, laying down light washes, building up tones. I worked over the pencil lines of the sketch, giving general light and dark tones to build up the form.

After I had laid in my watercolours, I went back over the original sketch and rendered the features: hair, eyes, feathers, etc. This took quite some time - especially that hair! After most of the pencil work had been done, I went back in and hit a couple spots with more watercolour, but not much.

Finally, I scanned and pulled this into Photoshop and hit it with some Levels, but I did very minimal editing. I did also scan in subtle watercolour textures and overlaid them on the orange "bricks", which I felt gave the work a little more depth.

And the finished piece: (larger version)

"I think the most important thing for a
young person starting out is that they should only try to make work that
they’re interested in, and that is true and honest to who they are. If
you look at the careers of anyone that’s made it or become successful,
they’ve all started out making work that they believed in, that they
were interested in. And they did it obsessively and compulsively, and so
people started noticing. So instead of, say, catering to a certain
audience or pleasing someone else they should just do work that they
feel like is the most interesting to them, at the time. Even though it
might not be accepted or noticed in the beginning, they should just keep
doing it until it becomes undeniable."
is the way I cope with every single thing I encounter in my life - the
good and the bad. And sometimes I think these pieces are the most honest
thing I can put into the world; when I am too afraid to own my own words, I can at least own the lines.

This piece is about giving oneself permission to move on, to allow fears about loss to pass through you, and to consider a higher truth.

Been really trying to focus back on watercolour and graphite recently. I forgot how much I missed getting my hands dirty. Digital painting is wonderful, but there is a trade-off. I will be posting process work of a personal piece I've been working on for 3 weeks soon, and I am making plans to create an illustration based on Radical Face's "Welcome Home".

If you have never heard this, plug your earphones in, lay your head back, and close your eyes.

It's hauntingly poetic.

One of my favourite parts about coming home is walking my sweet little dog down the dark, wet streets of my neighborhood. We're out in the country, so everything smells green and the air hangs on you. Most people don't like that kind of weather; but it's my favourite. It's nice to walk in silence, and look up through the trees, see the stars, and feel incredibly small.

Hello, darkness, my old friend; I've come to talk with you again.

Because a vision softly creeping, left its seeds while I was sleeping.

And the vision that was planted in my brain still remains,

within the sound of silence.

This show was comprised of over 20 local artists, musicians, fashion designers, filmmakers, and makeup artists, all in one space together. It was a ton of fun!

The venue was incredible - with exposed brick walls, industrial lighting, an indoor-balcony and outdoor bar, it was very charming and gave off just the right vibe for the show. I met a lot of incredible people and artists, and clinked my can of Red Stripe beer with many new and familiar faces. Most of the night was super crowded and busy, and my business cards flew right off my table! A huge thank you to all of my friends who came to support my work, and those who were there in spirit and supported in other ways!

Here are some photos of the night from my instagram :) Enjoy!

I've been taking on quite a few new illustration projects lately (and baking a LOT!), and it's quite an exciting ride :) This past Thursday, I showed at Radiate in Atlanta - it was a great time! I have quite a few photos that I'll be sharing in tomorrow's blogpost - stay tuned :)

For now, I want to ask for some love and support: I was very happy to find out that one of my designs has made it to the voting stages over at Threadless.com! It is in the running to become a printed t-shirt that will be sold on the site, but it needs votes to get printed.

Would you take a few moments to spread some art love for me and vote?

{ VOTE HERE }

(The highest score is a 5 - to vote, simply click the number alongside my illustration)

I would appreciate your support so much! If you like my design, I would be honoured if you'd share it with your friends -- tomorrow is the last day to vote!

* Coming up on the blog,
I will have step-by-step progress shots of several paintings, event photos of "Radiate", and hopefully soon I will be able to talk about some exciting opportunities I have as an illustrator (though for now I have to be a super-secret-agent-art-ninja and keep my mouth closed - tougher than it sounds!)
So I jumped out of bed at 2:30am and did a speedpainting, listening to this on repeat, as loud as my headphones would go.

One of the most frustrating, heartbreaking things in life is watching someone we love dearly go through something we are powerless to change or fix.

This weekend I finally saw the Dark Knight Rises. Besides falling completely in love with the soundtrack, the theme of the movie hit home for me for so many reasons. (I know this is where you're all wondering if I will reveal my spandex-and-armour-wearing alter ego, but sadly no)

The theme of the movie was overcoming obstacles, being beaten down and rising stronger. I generally don't get sentimental about movies, and in truth I will tear up at action movies with a great soundtrack quite a bit more than any sappy chick-flick. Batman had me pretending not to well-up in front of my movie-going friend on multiple occasions. I know it seems silly to get all emotional about a superhero movie, but it was inspiring to me for so many reasons. As Bruce Wayne scaled the walls of the pit, and all the prisoners below chanted, "Deshi Basara" (which means "Rise")... it's that moment when somewhere inside your chest you feel visceral recognition, empathy, and a sense of determination, like when a firework explodes and you feel the deep thud in every bone of your ribcage.

Sometimes loneliness can make you forget that we are all connected, that we have all felt the same happiness and the same pain. This painting was my attempt to explain myself where I knew words would fail me.
